Sustainable Org Helps South African Women Build Retail Enterprises

“Don’t give a woman a fish, teach a woman to fish AND teach her how to sell her fish.”

A motto written on The Clothing Bank‘s website, the South Africa-based business believes that sustainability comes first. Catering to unemployed women and single mothers, the organization teaches women how to trade clothing — which is donated by retailers — and eventually launch an enterprise.

“We really are taking the women on a journey to self-employment. Really finding solutions for her path out of poverty,” Clothing Bank CEO Tracey Chambers told CCTV Africa. “We recruit the women through a difficult processes. We engage them in a two-year training program that is very outcomes-based.”
