South Africa Home Affairs Ministry Cracks Down on Illegal Immigration

Illegal immigrants who have planned on making South Africa their home are soon to be informed about new policies that will prevent them from doing so. The country’s new Home Affairs minister, Malusi Gigaba, spoke to CCTV Africa about visitation and citizenship transitions that will no longer be accepted.

“[We’re] Trying to balance in our philosophy of international migration between economic imperatives as well as national security,” he said.

Illegal immigration tactics which involve asylum and workers protection are being weeded out as laws have been restructured. Foreigners are still trying to work through the process and may have to return home and reapply for new and appropriate visas, the report said.

“After today, they put a stamp and ask you to come back next,” one foreigner told CCTV Africa about the current situation at he Home Affairs ministry. “And when you come back the next week nothing is happening.”
