Kenya’s Indian Ocean Creations a Niche, Sustainable SME

CNBC Africa recently profiled Tilda Bowden, owner of Indian Ocean Creations, a workshop and wood company that restores wooden boats that have washed up on Kenya’s coasts. Some of the wood dates back 200 years — and although old still makes for an impressive repurposed furniture foundation.

“Our product is [in] a very niche market — it’s niche aesthetically, it’s nice price wise. It’s on the more expensive side, but it has a huge fan base,” Bowden told CNBC Africa. “It’s very rewarding having a great workshop of staff, but it’s very rewarding creating something that people really value and love.”

The 15-year-old enterprise creates sustainable living opportunities for workers in the shop who are wood cleaners and carpenters.
