New Uganda Cargo Tracking System Eliminates Police, Fees

The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has implemented a new cargo tracking system which will alert officials in the organization of not only location, but information related to tampering. According to a CCTV Africa report, Uganda will no longer rely on, nor provide payment to the police who beforehand acted as cargo escorts.

“It was easy to say that people are going to pay fees for escorts. But still there’s one challenge we’ve got,” Richard Kamajugo, Uganda commissioner for customs said in the report. “If you charge the owner of the goods and receipted this money as URA, that meant the money had to go to the consolidated fund.”

Business owners who would like to track their cargo can now do so — and no longer have to worry about paying out of pocket for the service. Although similar measures to track cargo are carried out differently in other East African countries, Uganda is sticking to the new system and the help of rapid response teams.
