South Africans Voice Concern Over ANC, Opposition Party

Since 1994, when Nelson Mandela implemented the African National Congress (ANC), the political party has ruled in South Africa. Now rural residents and other who feel they have not benefiting are considering supporting the opposition Democratic Alliance, Voice of America reported. Still rural area ANC representative Rabelani Gadabeni says all residents should hold onto hope.

“The things you can see here are because of the ANC,” Gadabeni, ward councillor for the Mutare municipality told Voice of America.

However, Songezo Mcapukisi, a student who doesn’t live in an area without running water still disagrees.

“The cost of living is really very high. We need to create an environment for investment in the country,” he said. “The government has been doing badly in terms of bringing investors into the country.”

In 2009, the ANC won over 85 percent of votes. Although campaigning efforts in rural areas haven’t been as strong as popular provinces, the 2014 election is predicted to keep the ANC on top.
