Diplomatic relations between Rwanda and South Africa broke down  earlier in March after South Africa expelled four Rwandan diplomats and one from Burundi for their connection with attacks and murder on Rwandan refugees living in South Africa. Rwanda responded by expelling six South African embassy staff, excluding only the ambassador, from Rwanda.

BBC have done an investigative piece on the mysterious death of a former Rwanda spy chief Col Patrick Karegeya at a hotel in Johannesburg after he went to meet a former informant on new year’s eve. The story looks at other attempts that have been made on Kayumba Nyamwasa, a former Rwandan army chief turned critic of President Paul Kagame.

In early March, armed men raided a government-protected home belonging to Nyamwasa. this was the second incident targeting Nyamwasa since he moved to South Africa in 2010. Four men are on trial after they stabbed Mr. Nyamwasa in the stomach as he returned to his Johannesburg home, in what the former military leader says was an attempted murder.
