A Russia Today video report revealed that 529 Muslim Brotherhood members and supporters of ousted president Mohammed Morsi, have been sentenced to death. The verdict was attached to claims of inciting violence and killing Egypt’s security officials after 2013’s day of violence — where it was estimated that 700 to thousands were killed. Said Sadek, a political sociologist told Russia Today that the court sentencing was necessary, however, not final as all capital punishment cases must be tried in an appellate court.

“We have to understand that this sentence comes against a historical backdrop. In 1981 when Sadat was killed, there was an uprising in upper Egypt, which is well known culturally for being violent — killing hundreds of policemen and soldiers,” Sadek noted.

“Now the state wants to reassert it’s authority. Otherwise, we will become chaotic like Libya and like Syria. That’s why it was very important for the government and the judicial system to send a strong message that we must protect the state and institutions.”
