The Yunak Evleri, Cappadocia, Turkey
This hotel isn’t inside of an old building, per se, but it’s certainly inside a former dwelling of note. The Yunak Evleri has just 30 rooms, all inside caves where people lived dating back to the fifth and sixth centuries. Rooms are decorated with items from the Ottoman Empire and are linked by labyrinthine hallways.
This hotel is a rarity as it’s a nonprofit. In a tiny fishing village near Hong Kong sits this colonial marine police station-turned-nine-room hotel. The hotel has kept many areas of the station intact, such as the staff canteen and briefing section which the public can visit during the day.
The Ritz Carlton Vienna is built inside historic palaces that are culturally protected properties in Austria. The hotel is also situated on one of the most famous streets in Vienna, where visitors can view buildings that have stood untouched from the 1860s.
The original Ampersand Hotel opened in 1888 but burned down in 1907. The building served as a cabin complex until it was taken over by the state. Today, the gorgeous hotel overlooking Saranac Lake is an upscale destination offering old-school experiences such as afternoon tea and tastings in the wine cellar.
The former Palais de Justice has been renovated and turned into this gorgeous hotel, but many of its past stayed intact. The façade remains mostly the same, and the lobby has the same royal, impressive look, but the old Court Room is now a restaurant.
The old and majestic United Artists theatre in Los Angeles is now an upscale hotel. The actual theater room is being refinished with new upholstery and a new retro ticket booth. Rooms each have original artwork and from the rooftop space, guests can see the famous intricate tower up close.
The Refinery hotel sits inside the historic Colony Arcade building. The 1912 façade has been restored, helping the owners get a historic rehabilitation tax credit. Inside you’ll find the tea parlor redone with limestone floors and tall columns. The lobby bar has the same name as the original salon and many of the same aesthetic features.
The Hotel Monaco is a high-end boutique hotel inside the General Post Office building, which is itself a National Historic Landmark. The rooms feature the type of colonial clean looks you’d expect from an old post office, such as vaulted ceilings, long windows and chandeliers.
L’ Iglesia Hotel is situated in the middle of a UNESCO World Heritage Site — the 16th-Century Portuguese walled city of Mazagan. When guests step outside, they can see monuments such as the Assumption Church and ramparts within a few blocks. The hotel itself was once a 19th-century Spanish church and former consulate.
The Palacio Astoreca is in the historical city center in Valparaiso and inhabits two buildings: a restored palace and an old house. Both retain their original appearance, but have been spruced up. The hotel itself is upscale with just 23 rooms, a spa, a wine cellar, a bar and a library.
