Taunina Teddies Garnering Big Business for South Africa’s Local Artists

Handcrafted teddy bears are more than just a pretty companion for children and collectors in South Africa. Taunina Teddies, an art-based business — which is earning increasing attention in the country — is also providing a employment and new opportunity for local women, CCTV Africa reported.

“Taunina was set up as an initiative to assist underprivileged women who have incredible hand skill around the world in emerging markets. These women are not crafters, they are artists,” co-founder Tracey Chiappini said of the luxury brand.

“I can afford to buy something — what I want — and make my dreams comes true,” artist Ennia Chikudza added. “My dreams are to build a house for my kids…I want a good future for them.”

All of the independent artisans go through a training which focuses on embroidery, fabrics and colors, according to CCTV Africa.
