At least 16 Nigerian job seekers were killed after a stampede broke out at a stadium in Abuja where more than half a million applicants were invited to fill less than 5,000 government jobs, officials and activists said.

An Aljazeera video report said that only one gate of the Abuja National Stadium was opened and people were desperate to get in causing a stampede.

Activist blamed government officials for inviting more candidate for the advertised positions than was required and failing to use modern technology to shortlist or conduct the interviews and avoid such an ugly scenario.

Nigeria, the most populated nation in Africa with over 170 million people, has one of the highest unemployment rates in the world due to its large composition of the youth and slow job creation opportunities by the government. Official statistics put the number of unemployed at about 40 million, an AP report said.
