10 Thai Hotels For Luxury And Romance

5 of 11

Once famous as a budget travel destination, these days Thailand is hot with the jetsetting crowd. Whether you are staying in Bangkok or Phuket, Chiang Mai or Hat Railay, posh hotels and resorts abound. Here are my personal favorites: 10 Thai hotels for luxury and romance.

1. Rayavadee, Railay

Situated between karst walls jutting into the emerald green water of the Andaman Sea, Rayavadee might be the most romantic resort in all of Thailand. It’s located on Krabi Province’s gorgeous Railay beach and accessible only by boat.

2. Anantara Bo Phut Resort & Spa, Ko Samui

Across the street from Bo Phut’s white-sand beach on the popular island of Ko Samui, in the Gulf of Thailand, the romantic Anantara Bo Phut Resort & Spa is a great spot for honeymooners. It also offers an extensive activities menu, a huge lagoon-style infinity pool and a blissful spa for Thai massages.

3. Banyan Tree Bangkok

I love this modern hotel in the heart of Bangkok. It boasts the city’s sexiest rooftop bar with 360-degrees views, and the rooms are swank and modern.

4. Shangri-La Bangkok

One of Bangkok’s original luxury hotels, the Shangri-La has been popular for decades, offering classic five-star elegance right on the river. It has four restaurants onsite, elegant colonial-style public areas and is an excellent spot to recover from jetlag.

5. Anantara Phuket Villas

On popular Phuket, but far removed from the chaos of Patong beach, this luxe property wins points for its romantic, secluded locale and over-the-top posh villas. Plus its fantastic swimming pool pictured here. If you’ve always dreamed of learning to cook Thailand’s national dishes, the resort operates a cooking school.

6. Banyan Tree Phuket

Another amazing resort in Phuket, this branch of the Banyan Tree resort chain has been reaping in awards for more than a decade now. And for good reason. It is located on gorgeous Bang Tao Beach and offers world-class service. Don’t skip the sunset dinner cruise in a converted long-tail boat.

7. Sri Panwa, Phuket

Another favorite property in Phuket, Sri Panwa is a stylish resort on Cape Panwa. It is spread across 40 acres of tropical forest high above the Andaman Sea. Sri Panwa is considered a minimalist retreat, but all the villas come with private infinity plunge pools. It’s also home to a swank and happening nightclub and multiple restaurants.

8. Six Senses Yao Noi

A sleepy island off Phuket, Yao Noi is home to the excellent Six Senses Resort. It’s the perfect place for a secluded honeymoon, as the island sees much less traffic than its busy neighbor, and can only be accessed by boat. By comparison, Phuket is linked to the mainland by a bridge.

9. Four Seasons Chiang Mai

Thailand’s popular northern city of Chiang Mai is famous for its temples, markets and striking landscape. The area’s first five-star hotel, the Four Seasons, is still my favorite. The destination resort is its own idyllic village surrounded by rice paddies and water buffaloes. I like the pavilion suites which are decked out in rich Thai silks and bold colors. The spa here is equally decadent.

10. Zeavola, Ko Phi Phi

On beautiful Ko Phi Phi, Zeavola is a boutique property that is the most luxurious and romantic place to sleep on this island in the Andaman Sea. Serving up barefoot luxury with a jungle vibe, it books out months in advance during the high season.
