Gen Z represents a big chunk of the consumer market, but it’s also one of the most stubborn. Research from PwC shows that this demographic tends to spend less than anyone else and be more selective when it comes to purchasing products. Some businesses think this means you can afford to ignore the market, but with so many Gen Z’ers now making up the consumer market, that’s a terrible idea.

Instead, you should focus on making your business more appealing to this market, and here are some key tips that will help:

Modernise Your POS System

The majority of Gen Z’ers will shop online – and those that do shop in-person will always pay via card. If your POS system is stuck in the past, then you immediately alienate this demographic. Here are two things you should implement right away to make a considerable difference:

  • Accept online orders and provide convenient online payment methods, like cards & Apple Pay
  • If you have a traditional store, be sure you swap out an old cash register for a new POS system that accepts contactless payments

Et viola: your business is now ready to accept Gen Z payments, and you no longer alienate them. It’s a simple trick, but you’ll be amazed by how many people in this consumer market refuse to buy things because the payment system sucks.

Prioritise Discounts & Loyalty Schemes

Gen Z loves a discount. They’ll almost always wait for prices to drop before they buy something – and, if truth be told, they will be tempted into buying something they don’t necessarily need if it’s discounted. Now, you need to be smart with your money management, but think of ways that you can offer discounts as often as possible.

Loyalty schemes spring to mind as the ideal solution: you get people to sign-up for a loyalty scheme that earns them benefits over time. They receive discounts on products that the rest of the public doesn’t get. Again, Gen Z loves this exclusivity, and when combined with getting discounted products, it’s very likely to lead to more purchases over time.

Appeal To Their Emotional Side

More than any other demographic, Gen Z cares about social responsibility, ethics, the environment, etc. With that in mind, if you want to win over more customer from this demographic, then your entire business needs to appeal to their emotional side. Strike up key partnerships or do things that genuinely make a difference.

You shouldn’t do this for the sake of it; actually implement things and beliefs that you care about. When Gen Z sees that your business legitimately wants to make the world or the local community a better place, they are way more likely to give you the time of day.

Overall, don’t slip into the habit of thinking that you can ignore Gen Z, especially if your products/services are perfect for this section of the market. Switch your approach to make your busines smore appealing to this demographic and they’ll start spending more money.
