Irv Gotti, the visionary founder of Murder Inc. Records, has passed away at the age of 54. The news was confirmed on Feb. 5, leaving fans, artists, and the music industry in shock. While the cause of death has yet to be officially disclosed, Gotti had been battling health issues in recent years, including a history of strokes and diabetes-related complications, The Hollywood Reporter reported.
The music mogul’s family shared a heartfelt statement on his Instagram, honoring his legacy: “It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved father, Irving ‘Irv Gotti’ Lorenzo, on February 5, 2025. Surrounded by family and friends, he departed this world, leaving behind a legacy that will forever resonate in the hearts of those who knew him and the countless lives he touched.
“Our dad was an incredible man, a true visionary who transformed the hip-hop industry and changed the game for artists and fans alike. His passion for music and dedication to his craft inspired many, and his contributions will continue to influence future generations.”
Gotti was instrumental in shaping the careers of numerous artists, including Ja Rule, Ashanti, and Lloyd, making Murder Inc. a powerhouse label during the early 2000s. His distinctive sound helped define the era, blending rap and R&B in a way that resonated with mainstream audiences. Under his leadership, the label produced numerous chart-topping hits, including Ashanti’s iconic self-titled album and Ja Rule’s unforgettable anthems.
Gotti produced Jay-Z’s 1996 song “Can I Live” from his debut album, Reasonable Doubt, and helped organize Jay-Z’s Hard Knock Life tour with DMX.
