The 20-year-old daughter of tech billionaire Bill Gates is dating a Black man, and she says she’s tired of the racist remarks she receives on social media about her boyfriend.

Phoebe Gates has been in a relationship with a fellow Stanford University student, Robert Ross. She’s shared a few photos of them in coupledom on Instagram. These photos displaying affection between the two have resulted in nasty trolls leaving negative comments on the pictures. Many of the negative comments bash her for being in a relationship with a Black man. In some comments, people accuse him of using her for her money.

She went public with her relationship on social media in July 2022.

Her father, Bill Gates, is the co-founder of the software giant Microsoft. His net worth is a whopping $107 billion. Because of her father’s fame, Phoebe often finds her own life under scrutiny. She is also a social media influencer, which can also make her life a public spectacle. She has more than 64,000 followers on TikTok and 195,000 on Instagram, The Daily Mail reported.

She recently told  The Information she was “done” with people making fun of her relationship.

“It’s 2023. I’m done being named for being in an interracial relationship,” the college student told the outlet. She also called out the continuous rumors and conspiracy theories about her family.

One conspiracy theory — that Bill Gates is planning to microchip the world through a covid-19 vaccine –started when someone manipulated video footage of Gates and others along with false news inserts, and the video went viral.

Phoebe said she’s fed up with the “misconceptions and conspiracy theories about my family and my relationship with my boyfriend.” She noted that once people follow her on social media, viewers realize what’s true and what’s not.

“But once they follow me, they stick around, and I think some of that is because of the issues that I post about, like women’s health,” said Phoebe Gates, who grew up in a $131 million mansion in Medina, Washington, with her parents and two siblings, Jennifer and Rory. Her mother is Melinda Gates, who divorced Bill in 2021 after 27 years of marriage.

While Phoebe didn’t share much information about her boyfriend other than numerous photos, she did reveal she doesn’t seem to be planning to follow her father into the tech world.

She said she plans to launch Phia –her own sustainable fashion startup this year — alongside her roommate, Sophia Kianni.

“We’re building out an idea to help make fashion more sustainable. We have so much planned for this year, and social media is going to be a big part of that,” she said.

In a different interview, one with WWD, Phoebe stressed she wants to “be her own person” and “branch away” from her parents’ success.

“OK, I’m my parents’ daughter, that gives me immense privilege, but it’s not what I’m defined by,” she said. “I want to have my own identity, I want to be my own person, I want to branch away from that, but how do I do that in a way where I can yield some sort of change?”
