Piracy, Human Trafficking Sovereignty Threats to Mozambique

From Bernama

Mozambican President Armando Guebuza on Thursday warned that the country is facing new threats to its sovereignty such as piracy, human trafficking and pillaging of natural resources, Mozambican news agency AIM reported.

Some older, more direct threats to the country’s sovereignty have persisted as shown by ambushes mounted by the former rebel movement Renamo on the main north-south road and against other targets in Sofala province.

But this type of threat was now being replaced by less direct threats like maritime piracy, cybercrime, human trafficking, drugs and illegal immigration, Guebuza said at the inauguration of the Higher Institute of Defence Studies (ISEDEF) in the southern city of Matola.

“Mozambique also runs the risk that its resources on land and on sea could be looted given the length of its maritime and terrestrial frontiers,” said the president.
