Mombasa-Nairobi Fuel Pipeline to Cost More Than $500 Million

According to a new Reuters report, a fuel pipeline extending from Nairobi to the Mombasa port will cost more than $400 – $500 million. This borrowed portion, Kenya is seeking to pay for via loans.

The Kenya Pipeline Company’s (KPC) internal funding program will support the unknown remaining balance, according to the report.

The company stated that upgrades will better accommodate petroleum demands:

“The key objective of this project is to replace the existing Line 1 with a suited pipeline size to meet the projected demand of petroleum products in Kenya and the eastern Africa region up to year 2044.”

KPC’s website outlines that construction of the pipeline began in 1976, opening two years later — wear-and-tear another reason why the pipeline is due for a touch up.
