Joint Effort: Morocco Explores Business With Gibraltar

From the Gibraltar Chronicle

A Moroccan delegation of businessmen met with representatives from Gibraltar at the Caleta Hotel aiming to developing the commercial relationship between Gibraltar and Morocco.

Layton Williams, Pro Consul of the British Honorary Consulate in Tangier, said the more relaxed attitude on entry to Gibraltar through Schengen Visas has had a direct influence on increased business interests.  “I think it has because every day I am receiving calls from Moroccan nationals asking me, “is it true? Can I now go to Gibraltar on a Schengen Visa? The news is out there and people are excited by it.”

During the breakfast meeting representatives from both sides discussed potential avenues to explore in commercial cross border relations with business, culture and tourism in mind.

“We have brought a delegation of Moroccan businessmen over to look at the emerging markets between our countries,” he said.

He said that the deep historical links between the two countries were important, adding that the financial centre on the Rock was also a factor.

Williams said that potential business opportunities have not been explored fully and feels that there could be a lot more to come in the future.

“We have bankers, notaries, people who have big development projects and I think we are trying to see how we can help each other out,” he said. “We are such a close neighbor and I do not think we have explored the potential fully.”

He said some of the delegations were big property investors on a huge scale who will explore tourism, building projects and will look for investors and financial backing.
