Karen Yelick, COO & CFO of Indego Africa along with creative director Deirdre King introduce the non-profit organization which partners with women artisans in Rwanda. Connecting cooperative participants to global markets, Yelick and King elaborate on the formation of business partnerships, global client outreach and preparing artisans for the retail market via training.
“Our team in Rwanda is fantastic and they’re our eyes and ears on the ground. They are always hearing about new cooperatives that are formed — or certain scales that may be an asset to the Indego Africa line,” King Said of the artisan scouting process.
“Five years ago the social impact we were measuring was more about food and housing security. Now we’re seeing — because the income has been steady — they’re much more aspirational…many of the women set up their own side businesses,” Yelick added.
