Whenever the Democrats need a boost in approval ratings and media attention, they parade out former President Barack Obama but some Black voters are exhausted with politics and what they consider patronizing rhetoric from 44 and his “don’t-be-tired” pleas.
Obama has been campaigning for Virginia Democratic gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe in the tight Virginia governor’s race. The former POTUS was the main attraction at a McAuliffe rally in Richmond, Virginia, on Oct. 23.
“I know a lot of people are tired of politics right now,” Obama said, acknowledging Democrats’ lack of enthusiasm. “… I understand why … Here is the thing, we can’t afford to be tired.”
Obama was in peak campaign form at the McAuliffe rally, New Republic reported — “loose and cracking jokes, telling screaming fans that he loved them too, and impressing upon voters the urgency of defeating Republican Glenn Youngkin—and by extension, Trump—at the polls.”
“I remember in 2016, folks said ‘I’m not inspired, Obama was OK but we didn’t get everything I wanted …’ and you all know how that turned out,” Obama said.
Obama also made recent campaign appearances for Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy in New Jersey, who is going up against Republican Jack Ciattarelli. The Dems are fighting hard to get the vote out for the 2022 midterms, and observers say the party may have a turnout problem. They need to win to maintain control of the Senate and to set up an easier path for the 2024 presidential elections.
Obama also campaigned heavily for Joe Biden in 2020 and was out in 2016 rallying support for Hillary Clinton.
Many Black voters aren’t here for Obama’s must-vote message. Black voters on Twitter are asking “What’s in it for us?”
“Democrats have been warned repeatedly,” said Tezlyn Figaro, a media political contributor and host of The Straight Shot No Chaser, in a tweet. “Democrats love winning, BUT only if they can lose it all immediately after. MSNBC covered this & rural Black voters (including older Black voters) ALL saying they are over it smh”.
“Vote vote and vote again for democrats”, Reporting-live-from-the-Kremlin @wishbumpycoulda tweeted. “When they take office, they’ll remind you that you’re not smart enough to understand how government works if you expected Dems to actually do anything specifically for your group in exchange for your vote. Rinse Repeat”.
“Obama condemns voter ‘inaction’ here, which is pretty craven when you consider that he went out of his way to thwart the NBA strike — an action which could have been a huge push toward the kind of transformational change he frames as next to impossible here,” tweeted Briahna Joy Gray, the former national press secretary for the Bernie Sanders 2020 presidential campaign.
“I always look forward to Obama popping out of his mansion to try to make people appreciate getting next to nothing,” Black in the Empire @blackintheempir tweeted.
DNC chairman Jaime Harrison recently tweeted from a McAuliffe campaign rally in Virginia. “On the campaign trail in Charlottesville with my friends @TerryMcAuliffe and @StaceyAbrams to remind voters to get to the polls and vote for Democrats up and down the ballot. Together, we can keep Virginia and our country moving forward!” he tweeted.
The Moguldom Nation CEO Jamarlin Martin pointed out that both Harrison and McAuliffe have lobbyist connections. “‘McAuliffe was a founder — and between 1985 and 1994, a partner and co-owner — of McAuliffe, Kelly & Raffaelli, a law firm and lobbying shop based in downtown Washington,'” Martin tweeted. “Both McAuliffe & Harrison are former K Street lobbyists. The SWAMP vulnerability Trump exploited is STRONG.”
Martin also noted how the DNC is pulling out all its big guns, from Obama and former Georgia Rep. Stacey Abrams to President Joe Biden for McAuliffe. “This guy is out here fighting for his political life. They are desperately circling the wagons w/ all the firepower they can find but it looks ‘establishment Terry’ is going down,” Martin tweeted. “Obama is out there blaming DEM voters for Trump again, I notice a ‘shirking’ of accountability.”
“Since Barack Obama is on the campaign trail pushing for Black voters to be turned out, I thought it good to remind people of the havoc his administration reeked on Black American income,” reparations advocate Kiara @25kWatts tweeted.
Twitter user Sabby Sabs brought up the fatigue of Black voters. “Tired of Obama and his ‘we should be happy we got something’ speeches. Who’s the ‘we’ and what’s the ‘something?'”
