2015 Nigeria Election to be Carried Out Via e-Voting?

Nigeria’s general elections aren’t until next year, however, members of the Nigeria Society of Engineers are already advocating for electronic voting.

According to IT Web Africa, the organization has used e-voting to elect its executive board and has even offered to supervise the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) during the use of NigComSat  — an e-voting system short for the Nigerian Communication Satellite.

In addition to already having been used successfully, e-voting will save Nigeria money Mustapha Balarabe Shehu, NSE president, said in the report.

“Government is already tackling the issue of power and broadband penetration. Once that is settled, I believe the next thing is for INEC to key in into the e-voting platform. We have tested it twice and we believe that it is workable,” Shehu said, noting that a trial vote would be implemented before the general election.

The e-voting process includes e-registration which requires finger printing and photos as a means of identifying voters.

“Prelude to the e-voting, an e-registration took place a day before where all eligible engineers had their data captured and saved on a database,” he added.

The NSE election included the registration of 2,048 engineers of which 1, 574 actually voted, IT Web reported.

In March of 2013, IT Web Africa also reported the removal of former Zambian president Rupiah Banda’s presidential immunity through e-voting.
