During a recent virtual NAACP Board of Directors meeting, U.S. Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey said he backed President Joe Biden’s “Build Back Better” agenda and urged Black voters to head to the polls for the midterm elections.

Black voters should not sit out next year’s midterm elections despite some growing frustration over stalled bills critical for Black America, Booker said.

Booker spoke with NAACP members about critical policy issues affecting Black Americans, from voting restriction laws being passed by Republicans across the country to the lack of movement to enact police reform, theGrio reported.

He described the negotiation collapse on the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act of 2021 as evidence of a “toxic culture” in the U.S. Senate but said he “will not stop” in his push for a national standard on policing.

It’s vital for Black voters to make their voice heard in order to get policy passed, the Democrat senator said.

“Without Black voters,” Booker said, “we will get decimated” in the upcoming reelections. “We worked so hard in last year’s election … we can’t let people get discouraged.”

This sparked a debate on Twitter.

Democrats have failed Black voters, @HajiAli3 tweeted: “Black Americans be mindful of your vote keep in mind that the Democratic Party has done nothing for you nothing in regards to you yet Democrats like Cory Booker defense Bidens racist actions against black Americans & the rest of the black Democrats in office are silent!”

Others on Twitter agreed with Booker. Candidly Tiff tweeted, “When he is right he is right. Stop suppressing the vote, we need more people vote not less.”

Black voters need to send a message to Democrats, W. Burlette Carter @ProfWBCarter tweeted. “Democrats being decimated by a failure of blacks to vote for them in large numbers would not be a bad thing. What has loyalty gotten black people? Democrats have acted against black safety in the courts and in policymaking. If Joe Manchin can negotiate, we can too.”
