Young Entrepreneurs In Burundi Face Uphill Battle

Entrepreneurs in Burundi face several challenges. InĀ  a country with a very high unemployment rate, many look to strike out on their own–but it is difficult. “Some Burundians have adopted good ideas to create their own jobs in order to develop themselves or give employment to young people. The majority of them have created small enterprises according to their small equity,” reports Radio Netherlands Worldwide.

While some continue working hard despite challenges, others throw in the towel. Iradukunda Joseph Jib, the owner of Across Burundi (a service enterprise) says it is very difficult to do business in Burundi because people have somehow prejudiced ideas against the youths. Many have a bad view of the youth, calling them drunkards, smokers or careless. So it is very hard to convince a big businessman to give market opportunities to young entrepreneurs. Jib adds that in Burundi, business is generally based on friendship.
