Some find it odd that while the U.S. government is welcoming Afghan refugees, it is deporting Haitians.

The U.S. is seeing a flood of refugees making their way to its borders. During the U.S. military withdrawal from Afghanistan after a 20-year occupation, the U.S. decided to evacuate Afghans who had worked with the U.S. in its long fight against the Taliban.

Over the last few weeks, thousands of refugees from Haiti have walked into Texas from Mexico following the devastation caused by a 7.2 magnitude earthquake in Haiti that killed more than 2,000 people and turmoil after the assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse in July.

The Haitian migrants have been walking across the Rio Grande River to a makeshift encampment under the Del Rio International Bridge in Del Rio, Texas. They are seeking asylum but the U.S. has already started to return them to Haiti, according to a new report.

The U.S. government plans to expel as many as 14,000 Haitians who crossed into the U.S., NewsOne reported.

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas is heading to Texas today as deportation flights gear up to take 3,000 Haitians a day back to Haiti.

“These people are extremely desperate. And they know that there is nothing to go back to in Haiti,” said Guerline M. Jozef, the executive director of the Haitian Bridge Alliance, a nonprofit group that works to settle Haitian migrants in California, New York Times reported.

So far, 23,876 “at-risk” Afghans have already arrived in the U.S., according to the State Department, CNBC reported.

Americans seem to be in favor of allowing the Afghans to remain in the U.S.

More than seven out of 10 Americans support resettling Afghans who worked with the U.S. government or military, found a recent NPR/Ipsos poll.

“That number includes strong majorities of Republicans, as well as white and rural voters, who are less likely to support admitting refugees and migrants from other parts of the world,” NPR reported.

On Twitter, people noted the different treatment for the refugees from Haiti versus those from Afghanistan.

“[Joe Biden, Barack Obama, the Bushes, the Clintons, Trump, Reagan are on the same racist, anti-Black, imperial team and they have all screwed Haiti] U.S. To Remove Thousands Of Haitians In Texas Seeking Asylum, But ‘There Is Nothing To Go Back To’,” tweeted ghetto intellectual™ @kzshabazz.

Many of the Haitian refugees were surprised by the reclamation flights. “A group of Haitians at the Texas border deported to #Haiti. They had no idea they were being deported. They woke them up close to midnight and put them on a plane, and their signatures were forged. They did not come from Haiti, but Chile and Brazil. They walked for 2 months” tweeted Justice 4 Haiti @madanboukman.

The U.S. has a complicated relationship with Haiti. President Donald Trump infamously referred to Haiti and African countries as shitholes

The U.S. has already extended protections for Haitian nationals living in the U.S. under Temporary Protected Status (TPS), NewsOne reported. That status was renewed in May for another 18 months for up to 55,000 Haitians. Haitians living in the U.S. under TPS were previously facing deportations until Mayorkas renewed their protections.
