Category 4 Hurricane Ida hit New Orleans on Sunday, leaving some residents stranded in attics and on rooftops all over the city as water rose and electrical power failed in what sounds like a nightmarish repeat of Hurricane Katrina, which left New Orleans residents’ lives in ruins 16 years ago.

Without electricity, desperate Hurricane Ida victims had few means to get help and friends and family reached out on social media on their behalf.

Hurricane Ida knocked out major electrical transmission towers and left the entire city without power.

All eight major transmission lines are down, according to the city’s power supplier Entergy. Nearly 1 million people were left without power statewide as of 11 p.m., WAFB reported.

MSNBC TV host Ali Velshi tweeted, “BREAKING: power is out in ALL of New Orleans due to “catastrophic transmission damage” to Entergy facilities caused by #hurricanida. New Orleans Sewer & Water has lost three power lines from Entergy to run some of its drainage pumps”.

Left in the dark, desperate families in the Big Easy turned to Twitter to reach out for help.

“PLEASE SOMEONE HELP MY FRIEND! HER AND HER MOTHER ARE STUCK IN THEIR HOUSE ON THE SECOND FLOOR! WATER IS UP TO THE DOOR KNOB THE ADRESS IS 2701 WILLIAMSBURG DR, LAPLACE, LA PLEASE DM WITH HELP!,” alexis @itzalexiis pleaded on Twitter.

@mayaaa3 tweeted, “2329 Virginian colony ave 2 adults 3 kids MY FAMILY NEEDS HELP NOW !!!!”

“YALLLL pleaseee go help my friend get her mommm!!!! Her mom is stuckkkkk in that house if you have a boat PLEASE go get her. 11 ridegwood Dr Laplace 70068!!!!! RT” Shay Renea @ShayRenea tweeted.

Gov. Ant @aglantz_AKenney tweeted out help information: “BATON ROUGE. Southern University’s F.G. Clark Acitivity Center is available as a shelter. Please pass along for those who may need it.”

Hurricane Ida has been blamed for at least one death, CNN reported.

“We are currently working to assess damage and identify a path forward to restore power, to those who can take it, in the area,” Entergy said in a statement.

Ida blasted through the city on the same date Hurricane Katrina devastated Louisiana and Mississippi 16 years earlier. Ida’s 150-mph (230 kph) winds tied it for the fifth-strongest hurricane to ever hit the mainland U.S., AP reported.
