Uganda’s Defense Force to Help Combat LRA Rebels in Sudan, Prime Minister Says

Uganda can play a key role in ending the conflict in Darfur, the western region of Sudan where the Sudanese government is trying to end its conflict with armed rebel groups, says Ugandan Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi.

Mbabazi said here over the weekend that the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) which had deployed units to the Central African Republic would pursue rebels of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) if they meted out terror on Darfur.

“If there is any hand that we can give, we shall gladly do so because it is our duty to help,” Mbabazi told a delegation led by head of the African Union-United Nations Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) and the joint chief mediator for Dafur, Dr Mohammed Ibn Chambas. They are in Uganda to consult on how to solve the conflict in Darfur.
