The White House and the Democrats have been warning about surging covid-19 cases as the delta variant spreads, and some are pushing mandatory vaccinations among lawmakers and staff to combat it. So one has to wonder if former President Barack Obama isn’t concerned about the message he’s sending by holding a potential covid superspreader event.
Obama’s birthday is Aug. 4 and he is expecting 700 people to attend an upcoming 60th birthday party despite growing concerns over new covid cases.
The birthday bash is expected to take place outdoors at Obama’s $12 million, 30-acre waterfront property in Martha’s Vineyard, even as officials warn of the dangers of large gatherings during the ongoing pandemic, The New York Post reported.
At least 200 staff will be on hand at his Massachusetts home this weekend to cater to the 475 invited guests, including Oprah Winfrey, George Clooney, and Steven Spielberg, according to Axios and The Hill.
Pearl Jam is scheduled to perform, Axios reported.
All guests are being asked to be vaccinated and there will be a “covid coordinator” to ensure safety protocols are followed.
A coalition of House Democrats is pushing for mandatory vaccinations for congressional lawmakers and their staff, Fox News reported.
“In the midst of a peak Delta Variant pandemic where the vaccinated are catching the virus, the Obamas are throwing a lavish soiree which includes 450 guests,” Keeks @GolferGirl305 tweeted. “Doesn’t seem like there is a legitimate fear of the virus by Obama nor his 450 high profile guests. I wonder why?? Hmmm”
“Cuz they can, it’s outdoors, and everybody’s vaccinated” Nope.@AlphaAmino responded, not seeing the Obama party as a problem. “Hardly any vaccinated people get sick enough to have to seek treatment. While vaccinated people can carry the Delta variant, they’re just giving it a friendly ride to the next antivaxxer.”

The Obama birthday party comes after health officials on Matha’s Vineyard issued a mask advisory even for vaccinated people while in indoor public spaces, The Vineyard Gazette noted.
The CDC reported on Friday that 75 percent of those infected with the virus in Massachusetts were vaccinated.
Big parties such as the one planned by the Obamas do not follow the general guidelines pushed by the Biden administration, The New York Post reported.
President Joe Biden will not be among the guests at his old running mate’s big day, the White House told Axios.
“While President Biden is unable to attend this weekend, he looks forward to catching up with former President Obama soon and properly welcoming him into the Over 60 Club,” a spokesperson told the outlet.
