In an effort to provide relief from the ongoing burdens of the covid-19 pandemic, Clark Atlanta University (CAU) has taken the unprecedented step of canceling and clearing all its students’ balances for the entire year of 2020 through the summer of 2021.

Noting that “the past two academic years have been emotionally and financially challenging” for students and families, CAU President Dr. George T. French Jr. proudly announced the news in a letter to alumni dated July 22.

“We are pleased to inform you that we are canceling and clearing all CAU student balances with the university for Spring 2020, Summer 2020, Fall 2020, spring 2021, and Summer 2021. Students will be able to enroll for the Fall 2021 semester with a zero balance,” French wrote.

According to the letter and a press release, the Atlanta-based HBCU was able to offer students’ this specific type of relief aid due to “a substantial amount of support has been received from the federal government under the CARES Act Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF).” French said it was “just a part of the ‘momentum’ CAU has experienced in the last 16 months.”

In addition to clearing students’ balances, CAU said it has been able to provide emergency financial aid, refund pro-rated housing and meal charges from Spring 2020, discount tuition and fees, purchase 4,000 laptops and give one to each financially enrolled student as well as give hotspots to students with limited or no internet access.

French said the faculty and staff at CAU have “worked arduously, day and night,” to navigate the pandemic, adding that they “will continue to do all we can to support their [students] efforts to complete their CAU education.”

“Their academic and professional future is important to me and the entire Clark Atlanta University family. We care about students and want to lighten their individual and family’s financial load so they can continue their journey in pursuing and attaining their educational and professional goals,” French said.

In a separate letter to students, French thanked students for their can-do attitudes despite the historic challenges the pandemic has presented. “I understand. That is why I am personally thankful for your resilience, perseverance, and ‘find a way or make one’ attitudes,” French said, quoting the university’s motto.

The move was celebrated on social media. “I love that for them! Imagine how much lighter them and their families feel. All those refunds will make a huge difference. … SOME schools care about ppl,” @Dani_Knope wrote on Twitter.
