Zambian Workers Urged To Emulate Chinese Work Ethic

From Post Zambia

Chipili district commissioner Raphael Kauseni has implored Zambian workers in the area to emulate “the Chinese wonderful work culture.”

Speaking when he officiated the inaugural end of year award-giving ceremony organized by China Henan for its deserving workers, Kauseni said the Chinese had a wonderful work culture, which every Zambian worker needed to emulate.

China Henan is a construction company that the government contracted to construct the Chipili-Luwingu road.

Kauseni said local workers should be desirous of changing their approach to work if Chipili district and the country at large were to develop.

He said Zambian workers had a lot to learn from their Chinese counterparts, whose mindset had led to the transformation of their country’s economy to what it was today.

“Remember, China during the mid and late 1960s was a relatively poor economy but due to change of mindset, the Chinese today have a very powerful economy that can ably compete with any other economy in the world,” Kauseni said.

“With discipline, this road (Chipili-Luwingu road) will be completed in record time. We can’t fail to do what the Chinese workers do when we have the same ability and capacity to do work,” he said.

And Kauseni commended China Henan for having employed 770 local workers, describing the move as unprecedented.
“We are grateful to China Henan for having decided to be domiciled in Chipili district. This has brought about a lot of benefits to the residents of Chipili. You have proved that you are a true partner in our development agenda; 770 jobs within five months of commencement of the project is no mean achievement. This is a practical job creation strategy for our youth, who are crying for jobs,” he said.

Kauseni appealed to company management to ensure that gender concerns are taken into consideration in the manner division of labor was implemented.

“Gender issues, in particular the employment of more women in this industry, should be taken seriously. Women shouldn’t just confine themselves to the kitchen, cooking for men or being flag girls by the road side. Get involved as truck drivers, grader operators and so on,” said Kauseni.
