UN Lends Cape Verde Funds To Promote Organic Farming

From Asemena

The United Nations Organization has made some two million escudos available to support the promotion of organic agriculture on the island of Santo Antão, specifically in the Alto Mira zone. The project will benefit some 40 local farmers.

According to the president of the Alto Mira Community Voice Association, Jailson Neves, the approximately 40 farmers benefiting from the program were satisfied with the results obtained from the project, which concluded in October. The farmers now carry out their activities using bio-fertilizers made with local products.Jailson Neves stressed that, thanks to the project, which lasted approximately one year, the farmers are now aware that the “use of toxic products to combat pests is not worth the damage it does.”

The farmers now know that they can find products locally, such as medicinal plants, waste from other products and manure, that may be used as fertilizer, without jeopardizing the environment and consumer health.
