Winnie Mandela Must Sell Possessions To Settle Debt, South African Court

It has only been a few weeks since the death of her former husband, South African icon Nelson Mandela, but now Winnie Madikizela-Mandela is finding herself in some financial trouble.

“A South African magistrate ordered Winnie Mandela to sell her possessions, including scores of paintings, sculptures and a silver tea set to pay off her debts, according to recent court documents,” reports EUR.

Items listed for sale include a dining table set, 50 paintings, sculptures and a “room with books.”

According to reports, Madikizela-Mandela owes the school around $4,300 in accommodation fees for a family member. She makes around  $98,000 annually as a member of South Africa’s parliament.

Madikizela-Mandela married Nelson Mandela  five years before he was imprisoned for 27 years during apartheid in 1963. Soon after his release in 1990, the couple later split, just before he became the country’s first black president after the end of the minority rule.
