From BizTech Africa

Kenya has begun its switch to digital broadcasting, following a High Court ruling that paved the way for digital migration as planned.

The switchover, initially set for December 13, was temporarily stalled by a court challenge. However, the High Court dismissed the challenge on December 23, and migration began on December 26.

The switchover to digital has now taken place in Nairobi County, Kiambu County, Ngong, Ongáta Rongai, Kitengela, Isinya, Kajiado, Athi River, Machakos, Thika, Makuyu, Kigumu Kerugoya, Githunguri and Embu.

In a media statement, the Cabinet Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Communications and Technology, Dr Fred Matiang’i, said the switch-off date was arrived at through consultation with the stakeholders involved under the auspice of the Digital Television Committee (DTC) at its 76th meeting held on 24 December 2013. The membership of the DTC comprises the Ministry of Information, Communications and Technology, Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK), representatives from consumer organizations, Media Owners Association and other content providers, signal distributors, and set top box vendors. The DTC is charged with the mandate of overseeing the implementation of Digital Migration in the country.
