President Obama’s Power Africa Initiative Off to a Slow Start?

CCTV Africa reports that a foggy business climate in Africa has cause U.S.-based energy giants to hold off on jumping aboard president Obama’s $7 billion Power Africa Initiative. The project which promises to reach toward granting 20 million homes and businesses power requires a larger effort from the private sector in addition boosts in development and trade as opposed to aid.

“It’s early in the process. Power Africa was unveiled obviously in South Africa and Tanzania just a few months ago. It’s early. We’re all impatient — we all want to see it done yesterday — but they’re moving in the right direction,” Mark Green, President and CEO of the Initiative for Global Development told CCTV Africa.

“Instead of running around with a diesel generator to charge their cell phones, they can just plug it into here,” Joshua Hogg, a Solargen Engineer said, elaborating on the function of a solar-powered generator. Home devices like these are expected to suffice until Power Africa begins full implementation.
