6 of 11

The opportunity to travel isn’t one that is economically feasible for many, given the up-front costs as well as having to give up your job at home. But what if traveling became your work, or you were able to pick up and earn a living halfway across the world? There are opportunities for this, so if the travel bug has been nagging in your ear for a while, it may be time to look into some of them.

Travel writer

Being a travel writer is the most obvious – but also potentially the hardest to get. There are a few lucky ones out there who get paid to travel and experience amazing things and then tell others about it. Whether it’s writing for a book, magazine, website or blog, companies usually cover airfare and expenses, along with a salary for the work you complete. If the nomadic lifestyle suits you, this could be something worth pursuing.

Peace Corps

Peace Corps volunteers travel to all of the corners of the Earth to live and work in communities that need help. Though the pay is modest, you have the opportunity to become immersed in an entirely new culture and contribute something meaningful. The stipend covers expenses, and the experiences you’ll leave with will make you richer than you ever thought possible.

Given that you’re reading this article, I’m going to make the assumption that you know English, whether or not it’s your first language. There are countless programs out there that place English speakers in communities all over the world to teach English to people from all walks of life — a difficult but rewarding experience if you’re up to it! If you’re fluent in other languages, there are many programs that look for language teachers of all kinds for similar positions.

Photographer

Again, this one takes a lot of skill and even more luck, but if photography is a passion, it’s one worth pursuing. Photographers travel across the globe to give others a peek into places they’ll never be able to go. Whether it’s capturing nature and animals, architecture, important current events, or even celebrities, photographers have the capacity for an incredible amount of international work. It helps when you’re not tied down to a desk!

Pilot

OK, you don’t really get to live abroad while you’re a pilot, but you do get to see amazing new places. And while it’s unlikely that you’ll get to spend a week in Venice, Italy or Sydney, Australia between flights, you have the opportunity to see more places in a year than most see in a lifetime. Plus, when you actually are on vacation, you still get to fly for free! Bonus point!

Everyone from the average tourist to rock stars and foreign dignitaries need interpreter services, giving you the opportunity to act as a language ambassador for those unable to communicate on their own. Plus, you’ll get the scoop on all kinds of interesting conversations!

Working holiday visas

If you’re not looking for something permanent, but would like to travel extensively with the ability to pick up work, check out countries that offer working holiday visas. Usually good for anywhere from three months to a year, the visas allow you to legally live and work in a given country for the duration, though full-time work with benefits is not permitted for the most part. Working holiday visas are incredible opportunities to fund your travels and potentially gain new skills along the way.
