South African Retailer Woolworths Pays Tribute to Mandela via Choir Flash Mob

Chain retailer Woolworths deviated from its original plan to perform U.S. icon James Brown’s “I Feel Good,” and instead arranged an in-store flash mob performance to honor Nelson Mandela. The Soweto Gospel Choir sang “Asimbonanga (Mandela),” a 26-year-old Mandela tribute made popular by South African musician Johnny Clegg. Also, in light of Mandela’s December 15 funeral, Woolworths stores will close.

Woolworths was recently in the news as the retailer closed three pilot stores in Nigeria, pointing to poor sales and low growth potential.
