World Food Programme to Cut Resources in DRC

In Democratic Republic of the Congo’s North Kivu province, “hundreds of thousands” have been displaced due to rebel conflict, the World Food Programme (WFP) reported. Now camps in the area face new hurtles as WFP is experiencing a shortage of food and resources. Despite the defeat of insurgents by the DRC’s government forces, the more than 20 rebel groups in operation force families to stay put in internally displaced camps — possibly soon with no food at all.

“With stocks in WFP’s local warehouses running low, a reduction — or in some areas a total suspension of food assistance — is now inevitable,” WFP announced in a recent video report. “Displaced families in Mugunga 1 camp have already been making-do with half rations for months. But the needs in DRC are immense, and WFP’s resources are nearly exhausted.”
