“European commissioner for cooperation and development Andrés Piebalgs expressed the European Union’s availability to help us achieve a 100 percent penetration rate in terms of renewable energies,” said José Maria Neves after a meeting with the European official. According to the Prime Minister, the issue of renewable energies is one of the “main priorities” of cooperation between Cape Verde and the European Union.
The head of the Cape Verdean executive and the commissioner also discussed the issue of security and stability, as well as macro-economic support related to budget aid and support for the carrying out of reforms in Cape Verde. “There is enormous interest on the part of the European Union with regards to the stability and security pillar in the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) space, which is any we also discussed the issue of maritime security, stability, human trafficking and organized crime,” he said.
Neves also said that the process of the implementation of the Cape Verde-EU visa accord was moving along “normally” and that no legal “obstacles” have come up. “We also discussed the issue of the upcoming Samoa summit, which will take place in 2014 and has to do with small island states that are expected to develop projects to guarantee the better support from the international community for their development.”
