Cape Verdean Wine Venture In Demand In Europe

From Asemena

Maria Chaves wines, the result of a project elaborated by the Association for Solidarity and Development (ASDE), are being exported to the Netherlands, Italy, Germany, Portugal and France, and in the near future are also expected to be available in the United States of America. The news comes from Philippe Gardin, the manager of Cabo Intex, the company that will take the Cape Verdean wine beyond the country’s borders.

So far, some 6,000 bottles of the wine have been exported to Europe, and by the end of this year, another shipment will be sent to the continent, where the wines, which have been baptized with the names Santiago, São Vicente, Santa Luzia and São Filipe, “are beginning to gain acceptance,” according to the manager of beverage import-export company Cabo Intex.

The plan is to export some 35,000 bottles to Europe and then to the United States, a country from which the company has received a number of orders. Given the relatively small-scale production levels, however, Maria Chaves is unable to respond to all of its reqeusts, and Cabo Intex has opted for phased exports, “in order to ensure regularity on the international market.”
