Nigeria’s Main Airport Reopens After 20-Hour Shutdown

Associated Press reported that Nigeria’s Aviation Ministry saying the international airport at the country’s capital, Abuja, had been reopened after a Saudi cargo plane that has blocked the runway was removed.

The blockage left scores of passengers stranded at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, while both local and international airlines cancelled flights to and from Abuja.

Aviation Ministry spokesman Joe Obi was quoted by Associated Press saying a Boeing 747 cargo plane veered off at the maneuvering area of the runway and into a maintenance area after landing Wednesday night.

The airlines were also counting loses. These included Arik Air, a local airline that conducts about 16 flights from the airport andAero which conducts 13 flights.

“We cannot quantify the loss because Abuja is not the last destination, we operate to Abuja and then move to Port-Harcourt or Enugu, it is a big loss”, an official of one of the airline told BusinessDay.

Nigeria’s Accident Investigation Bureau said it was investigating an accident involving the plane but gave no details.
