Moments after Nelson Mandela’s death was announced Thursday, social media sites like Twitter, Facebook and Instagram were filled with personal messages to one of the greatest leaders of modern times. Here we give you 10 tweets, published as the news zipped across the electronic planet, commemorating Madiba’s life.

 

1. Apollo Theater

The Apollo Theater in Harlem changed its marquee just minutes after Mandela’s death was announced. Since doing so, this photo has been retweeted 1,000s of times.

The former president was one of Mandela's close friends. He posted this tweet shortly after South African President Jacob Zuma announced Madiba's death late on Thursday afternoon. Mandela was 95.

3. U2

Bono doesn't appear to have a Twitter account, but the verified U2 account changed its profile picture to a photo of Madiba and included this message.

 

4. Steve Case

AOL's co-founder posted a picture of his family with the South African leader.

 

5. Barack Obama

President Barack Obama left a personal tweet commemorating Mandela on his official page.

While news personality and talk show host Katie Couric paid her respects with this tweet.

7. Manchester United

Mandela's death didn't just touch world leaders and celebrities; the tributes continued in the public areana too, like this tweet from the popular British football club Manchester United.

 

8. Anderson Cooper

The CNN host dedicated multiple tweets to Mandela's memory. This was his first.

 

9. Lindsay Lohan

Even LiLo took to Twitter to quote Mandela in honor of his passing. Her homage garnered more than 2,000 retweets in less than four hours.
