Omoyele Sowore Talks Sahara Reporters, Becoming A Self-Taught Journalist [Part 1 of 3]

 

Omoyele Sowore, founder and publisher of Sahara Reporters recently visited AFKInsider‘s studio where he discussed moving on from grassroots activism to choosing a web platform to combat corruption. He also talked prevalent issues in Nigeria and creating a similar citizen journalist platform in other African countries. In the above part 1 of the interview, Sowore elaborates on his motivation and beginnings in investigative reporting.

“I was motivated by the declining standard of media that greeted Nigeria after the country returned to civil rule in 1999. Prior to that I was an activist; I fought alongside several activist in the country essentially to bring about civil rule,” Sowore explained.

“I felt like people needed to get accurate and adequate information,” he said. “I started by writing articles, then later joined up with someone in 2005 to start a major project of looking at properties owned by Nigerian politicians offshore.”
