South African Firms ‘Taking Climate Change Seriously,’ New Report

There is no doubt leading South African businesses have a “genuine intention” to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions, National Business Initiative (NBI) CEO Joanne Yawitch said recently in a report on the emissions of the JSE’s top 100 companies.

Eighty-three companies, 17 of which had no obligation to report on their emissions as they were not listed, responded to a survey by London-based think-tank the CDP on South Africa’s greenhouse gas emissions — the second-highest response rate globally.

The CDP acts on behalf of 722 institutional investors representing $87-trillion in assets.

Its report — the South African version of which was released in Johannesburg on Thursday by the CDP in collaboration with the NBI and the South African Post Office — is an attempt to accelerate increases in energy efficiency and a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, related to global climate change.

South Africa was beaten only by Europe, which recorded a 90 percent response rate.
