Lonely Planet Names Cape Verde Top Travel Destination For 2014

The new edition of Lonely Planet’s annual “Best in Travel” guide has just been released, with Cape Verde, São Tomé and Príncipe both standing out among the top island and beach destinations for best quality-price ratio.

In the category of beaches and small islands, Cape Verde and São Tomé and Príncipe both ranked among top 10 destinations. Among Cape Verde’s qualities are its “Latin vibe” and the fact that it is “hard to classify,” with highlights ranging from the “lava lands of Fogo to the luxurious valleys of Santo Antão.”

But, stresses Lonely Planet, “the best beaches belong to Boa Vista, an Island virtually awash in sand,” with “Sahara style dunes” in the interior, fine sand beaches and winds perfect for windsurfing. Boa Vista also merits attention for being an important spot for sea turtle nesting.
