South Africa Auto Workers End Strike

The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa accepted a pay raise to end its month-long strike, agreeing to a 10-percent pay raise this year and 8 percent over the next two years.

“The strike was very hard for us,” said Irvin Jim, general secretary of the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa.

The strike in the car components industry caused severe disruption, especially to exports. Last week, Bodo Donauer, managing director at BMW South Africa, said the company had been unable to produce 11,000 cars while its workers were striking.
