Nostalgia is good for the soul and there are so many things to be nostalgic about. Why not try to bring some of them back? The world is changing quickly, but there are some things from past generations that are worth making the effort to bring back. From fashion to nightlife to language, there are plenty of trends that need to make a comeback in 2013.
Parachute pants
MC Hammer made them famous, but parachute pants were functional as well as stylish. Not only could you smuggle your pets into restaurants with ease, but they also eliminated the need to worry about panty lines or your pants splitting when you bent over.
Class cocktail parties
More than just happy hour ’til 7 p.m., the traditional cocktail party needs to come back, with everyone dressing up to the nines on a Tuesday for no reason other than to enjoy a good martini. It’s more classy than chugging beer tubes of PBR, and won’t leave you with the same hangover at work the next day. Also, if everyone could discuss the potential Cold War with the Soviet Union and the necessity of fall-out shelters while partaking in these parties, that’d be great as well.
Rat tails
It’s like saying, “I want to make a good impression, until I turn around.” Easier to hide than the mullet, but with the same kind of rocker attitude, the rat tail was a gem of a hairstyle. Plus, it’ll keep the back of your neck warm in the winter (granted, just a little part of it, but every little bit helps)!
Slapstick comedy
Comedy is just so offensive these days. Not that it’s not hilarious, but you always hear about comedians landing themselves in hot water with a just-over-the-line joke, usually targeting a specific race or group of people. There is nothing wrong with laughing at somebody who just hit himself in the privates, or another who slipped and fell in the middle of the street. It’s innocent, and we all like to take pleasure in others’ misfortunes.
Scrunchies
They were more comfortable to wear around your wrist than a regular rubber band, and also didn’t leave that annoying crease in your hair when you tied it back in a ponytail. Plus, hello! Stylish!
Innocuous expletives
The world has turned into such a profane place nowadays! Whatever happened to the great old sayings, such as “Applesauce!,” “Baloney!,” or “Horsefeathers!” They have a certain kind of panache when delivered correctly, and are much more crowd-appropriate. Also, farewells such as “Stay groovy!” It just makes you feel good.
Disco
Everything about disco was awesome – the music, the decorations (disco lights are actually very flattering, too), and the lifestyles. The practice of the disco nap, or taking a quick catnap before heading out until the wee hours of the morning, is widely under-utilized now, and should really be brought back.
Fanny packs
Do you know how useful these things are? Not only do you have everything handy right at your fingertips, but it also eliminates the worry of being pickpocketed, as everything remains in your eyesight at all times. They’re easier to hang onto than purses, and they truly break up an outfit in just the right way.
Voguing/Tutting/The Sprinkler/etc.
Old-school dance moves are more than something to be brought out as a joke and mocked. They’re more realistic for most of us who are unable to get down and twerk or jump into the middle of a break dance circle, and still look cool (well, sort of). Either way, the basic moves are fun and should be brought back with the seriousness with which they were once delivered.
Flapper dresses
Everyone looks good with a fringe.
