Daymond John built a business and fortune from the ground up while dealing with dyslexia for his entire life. That in itself is akin to climbing a mountain with one hand tied behind your back.
The founder of successful clothing line Fubu says, as a youth, he actually did not know the name of what hindered him from being able to read until he was an adult.
But dyslexia, a condition that makes it hard for many children to succeed in school due to their struggles with reading, was what propelled Daymond to succeed.
He was successful due to the following three things.
To grasp any new concept, Daymond would do it three times just to be sure he had understood it correctly. This attention to detail and repetition helped him a lot when he was launching Fubu. He just had 10 shirts which he would rotate among hip-hop rappers to wear on videos.
His mom, knowing he had a reading disability, made him read the New York Times out loudly every Sunday. This helped him with his reading comprehension and allowed him to understand the power of words. His father thought his son was slacking at school.
Listen to GHOGH with Jamarlin Martin | Episode 68: Jamarlin Martin
Jamarlin talks about the recent backlash against LeBron James for not speaking up for Joshua Wong and the violent Hong Kong protestors.
Daymond turned his visual thinking style of reading into a skill he would use in business. He understood what kind of “look” people loved and this helped him when he was launching Fubu, which largely targeted the hip-hop music world.
