You’d like to think that if you work hard, pay your dues and know the right people, the sky is the limit as far as earning goes. Check out these cities where women in certain industries with dreams of high earning may want to think twice before putting down roots.

Seattle, Washington

Average income for men: $61,412

Average income for women: $44,897

The tech capital of the West Coast, Seattle is home to companies like Microsoft and Amazon.com. Within those industries, women can make up to 86 percent of what men make, but in most other lines of work men make on average more than $24,000 a year than women.

Tulsa, Oklahoma

Average income for men: $45,312

Average income for women: $33,048

The surprising thing about the gender pay gap in Oklahoma is that it is larger in the metropolitan areas, with most women making 56 percent of what men make. In sales jobs alone, the gender pay gap is $5,000 more than the average gender pay gap for the country.

A hub for financial services, Stamford has thousands of individuals working for banks. Western Connecticut has an (un)impressive gender pay gap, with women making on average only 54.8 percent of what men make.

Wichita, Kansas

Women working in the metropolitan area of Palm Bay made barely 70 percent of what men made in 2011. Florida as a whole has the sixth largest gender pay gap nationally. But, Palm Bay has one redeeming quality: the computer and mathematical industries pay women on average $3,900 more than they pay men.
