Knowing that race is a divisive issue in the U.S., the Russians played us, fanning the flames of what amounted to a non-issue when Colin Kaepernick took a knee against police brutality in 2016, according to presidential candidate Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.)

“The Russian bots started taking that on,” Harris said on the New York radio show The Breakfast Club. “We have to know when we’re being played.”

Jamarlin talks to Ryan Wilson, founder of Atlanta’s Gathering Spot. They discuss Wilson’s plans to scale his profitable subscription and events business, and whether Kamala Harris’ candidacy will result in a civil war in Black America. They also discuss the term “people of color” and why Atlanta is one of the hottest cities for tech.

When then-San Francisco 49ers quarterback Kaepernick started his protest as the 2016 NFL season was gearing up, “many smart people have said that actually was not a thing,” Harris said.

Now Harris said, the bots are coming after her. Evidence of bot activity emerged in a recent attack on Harris after her breakout performance in the June 27 Democratic presidential debate, Huffington Post reported.

Harris’ bot-blaming approach to racial divisions did not go well on Twitter.

“Y’all gotta stop blaming Russian bots for racial tension in America,” @BreeNewsome tweeted. “Bots didn’t murder Trayvon Martin. Bots didn’t lynch thousands of Black people. Bots didn’t implement chattel slavery. Bots didn’t vote for Trump. Bots don’t run the racist government. Own your shit.”
