U.K. to Discontinue South Africa Aid in 2015

The British government said Tuesday it will cut off direct aid to South Africa in 2015 in light of the nation’s emergence as a regional economic power — an announcement the South African government warned could affect bilateral relations.

The U.K. currently provides 19 million pounds ($29.5 million) of aid a year to South Africa, with most of the assistance focused on reducing maternal mortality rates.

Britain’s International Development Secretary Justine Greening said U.K. aid had helped South Africa transition from apartheid to a “flourishing, growing democracy” as she announced a change in relations between the two countries.
