Sisters who have something valuable to add to the culture’s conversation, but have no idea where to start are getting a hand-up by AMPED. The Denver-based non-profit is currently accepting applications from women of color for its podcast incubator program, From the Margins to the Center.

Committed to achieving equity in media by providing underrepresented communities with the tools they need to tell their own stories, AMPED’s program is the first podcast incubator of its kind. Its work goes against the grain of other diversity initiatives that have been accused of leaving Black women out.

It will take place this June in Denver and provide 28 hours of audio storytelling instruction, weekly classes, a keynote session with  Juleyka Lantigua-Williams, a one-year membership to the House of Pod recording studio, and access to open drop-in sessions.

Listen to GHOGH with Jamarlin Martin | Episode 32: Shireen Mitchell

Jamarlin talks to serial entrepreneur and technologist Shireen Mitchell about whether Black tech investors invest enough in Black entrepreneurs. They discuss Facebook and Google de-platforming Black activists and how the algorithms disproportionately censor people who speak out against those in power.

Participants will also be paired with leading women producers of color as mentors and the most promising producer will have the chance to receive a $5,000 grant to support the first season of their podcast.

Though based in Denver, the program is open to women of color everywhere. However, AMPED will not provide housing and transportation to out-of-state applicants, so encourages local Denver women to apply.

In addition to AMPED, House of Pod and Lantigua-Williams‘ production studio, the program is made possible by Podcasts in Color and Arts in Society.

Aspiring female podcasters must submit an original idea for a podcast that hasn’t been made yet. Applications are due May 9. To apply, click here.
