Hollywood director and screenwriter John Singleton has died after being in a coma since suffering a major stroke on April 17.

A family member told FOX4KC in Kansas City that Singleton, 51, had died early Monday.

However, TMZ reported that Singleton was alive and on life support at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in L.A. He was in a medically-induced coma but was unresponsive and not improving.

Earlier reports that Singleton died were “inaccurate,” Singleton spokesperson Shannon Barr said in a statement to Newsweek.

Then his family announced later on Monday that he had died, according to Associated Press.

Born in 1968, Singleton grew up in South Central Los Angeles. He made “Boyz N the Hood” soon after graduating film school at the University of Southern California. The film jump-started Singleton’s career, as well as then-relatively unknown actors Cuba Gooding Jr., Morris Chestnut and Ice Cube, who wrote a hit single for the film as a member of the group N.W.A.

Singleton was nominated for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay for the film at the Academy Awards, making him the first African American and youngest person ever nominated.

He received more nominations and several wins over the course of his career for his work including “L.A. Burning: The Riots 25 Years Later,” “American Crime Story”, “Rosewood”, “Hustle & Flow” and “Shaft” and
the box office hit “Four Brothers”.

Singleton was married to Ghanaian princess and actress Akosua Cyamama Busia from 1996 to 1997. They have a daughter, according to Biography.
